Garden, Greenhouse and Allotment
At Ducklings, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning experiences happen outdoors. Time spent in nature supports children’s development in ways that cannot be replicated indoors, helping them grow in confidence, curiosity and independence. Our large garden, on-site greenhouse and regular visits to the local allotment are an important part of everyday life at nursery.
Exploring the Garden Environment
Our garden offers a rich and stimulating space where children can explore freely while remaining safe and supported. They dig, plant, build, run and climb, developing their physical strength and coordination through active play. Seasonal changes bring new learning opportunities, from fallen leaves in autumn to blossoms and insects in spring. Children are encouraged to observe, ask questions and share their ideas, helping to develop early scientific thinking and language skills.
Hands On Learning in the Greenhouse
The greenhouse allows children to experience the full life cycle of plants at close hand. From planting tiny seeds to caring for growing plants, children learn patience, responsibility and the importance of routine. Watering, checking growth and spotting changes from day to day help build an understanding of cause and effect. These practical experiences also support early maths skills as children count seeds, compare sizes and talk about time and growth.
Visits to the Allotment
Our regular visits to the allotment give children a deeper connection to where food comes from. They take pride in harvesting vegetables they have helped grow and enjoy tasting fresh produce. This experience supports healthy eating habits and encourages children to try new foods. The allotment also provides opportunities for teamwork, turn taking and communication as children work together and share tasks.
Discovering Wildlife and the Natural World
Outdoor learning encourages children to slow down and notice the world around them. Spotting a caterpillar, listening to birds or watching bees at work helps children develop respect for living things. These moments of discovery often spark conversations and questions that extend learning well beyond the garden. Parents frequently tell us how excited their children are to share these experiences at home.
Supporting Wellbeing and Confidence
Spending time outdoors has a positive impact on children’s emotional wellbeing. Fresh air, open space and opportunities for adventure help children feel calm, confident and happy. Outdoor learning allows children to take safe risks, make choices and build resilience, all of which support independence and self belief.
Outdoor Spaces as Learning Environments
At Ducklings, our outdoor areas are more than places to play. They are carefully planned learning environments that support all areas of development. By bringing learning to life through nature, we help children develop skills and attitudes that will support them throughout their education and beyond.
At Ducklings, we are proud to nurture a love of the natural world, helping children become confident learners with a lasting sense of curiosity and wonder.
