Key Developmental Milestones

Understanding and recognizing developmental milestones can help you support your child’s growth. Below are some key milestones in early childhood development:

1. Infancy (0-12 months)

• Social and Emotional:
  • Smiles at people (around 2 months)
  • Enjoys playing with people and may cry when playing stops (4-7 months)
  • Shows fear of strangers (8-12 months)
• Language and Communication:
  • Coos and makes gurgling sounds (2-4 months)
  • Babbles with expression and copies sounds (4-7 months)
  • Responds to own name (8-12 months)
• Cognitive:
  • Follows moving objects with eyes (2-4 months)
  • Watches faces closely (4-7 months)
  • Looks for things they see you hide (8-12 months)
• Movement and Physical Development:
  • Holds head up (2 months)

  • Climbs onto and down from furniture unassisted (2-3 years)

3. Preschool (3-5 years)

  • Takes turns in games (4-5 years)
  • More likely to agree with rules (4-5 years)
• Language and Communication:
  • Can name most familiar things (3-4 years)
  • Speaks in sentences of 5-6 words (4-5 years)

• Cognitive:
  • Can work toys with buttons, levers, and moving parts (3-4 years)

• Encourage Play: Play is crucial for development. Provide opportunities for your child to engage in various types of play, including solo play, parallel play, and group play.
• Read Together: Reading to your child promotes language development and a love for books. Choose age-appropriate books and make reading a daily habit.
• Foster Independence: Encourage your child to try new things and praise their efforts. Simple tasks like dressing themselves or helping with chores can boost their confidence and skills.
• Stay Active: Physical activity is important for motor development. Take your child to the park, dance together, or play active games to keep them moving.

Remember, Every Child is Unique

Every child grows at their own pace, and it’s important to celebrate their unique journey. You will receive regular observations of your child’s learning as well as termly assessments of your child’s development. As well as this we undertake speech and language assessmnets using the WELLCOMM tool. We wil always keep you informed of your child’s progress and any additional support that may be required.If you have any concerns about your child’s development, don’t hesitate to speak with your child’s Key Worker.
