The Curiosity Approach

Ever wondered what this is and how it fits into Early Years Education?

The Curiosity Approach has its roots in the Emilio Reggio, Steiner and Te Whāriki approaches to Early Years Education.

Curiosity is the key to learning. It encourages children to explore, think and do for themselves.

Over the coming months we will be moving towards this style of learning within our setting.

Why?

Plastic, no matter what it is made into, is all the same. It smells the same, feels the same, it’s indestructible. Bright colours everywhere can overstimulate children. Plastic toys serve only one purpose, the purpose for which they were originally designed.

We want to bring many more natural resources into the setting. We want to encourage the children to experience different smells and texture, and to explore, think and create using these resources.

We want to encourage the children to develop:

Independent thinking

Stronger non-verbal communication

Language and verbal communication

Problem-solving skills

Lifelong learners

We have already made a start by making the rooms much more neutral in appearance, and using neutral colours in our displays to help our children’s work stand out. We also appealed through the A Little Bit of Stone Facebook page for loose parts to help kickstart our collection.

We provide delicious and nutritious food for our children based on the Government’s Eat Better, Start Better Guidance. We can and do also cater for children with food intolerances and allergies. See the menus to see our current 4-week rotation.
