Further information
Absence
It is important for your child’s progress that s/he attends regularly. If your child is unable to attend, please let us know by telephone.
If your child is unwell or taking a course of antibiotics, please keep him/her at home as s/he will not enjoy pre-school and may infect others. If s/he has a tummy upset, allow a full 48 hours before sending them back to class.
If your child becomes ill during pre-school, we will contact you. It is important that you keep us informed of any change of phone number in case of emergency. Minor bumps and injuries will be dealt with by a qualified first aider. We will always inform you if your child has had any injury at nursery.
Observations
The main strategy for assessing young children is observation. Children’s skills, knowledge and experiences are monitored on a daily basis. This helps us to target their emotional and educational needs more precisely and understand children’s next steps, so children are always developing, learning and moving forward. Observation of activities and learning documented in individual on-line Learning Journals.
You will be invited to parent consultation with the Pre-school staff at intervals throughout the year. This provides a more formal opportunity to discuss and celebrate your child’s progress and to talk about the next steps for their learning. We will often talk informally with you about your child and always welcome your questions and comments.
Major changes at home can affect a child’s behaviour and performance. In order to support your child, please inform us of any personal changes.
Toileting
Do not worry if your child is still in nappies we will change them until they are ready for potty training. We will then work with you to get them dry. If your child is still in nappies please send enough nappies, baby wipes, nappy sacks and anything else they may need for their personal care in a named bag each day.
Clothing
We offer a range of uniforms with our logos for you to purchase on. Having a uniform gives a child a sense of belonging, it saves their own clothes from getting ruined during a busy day in the setting.
We encourage older children to be independent and have a I care attitude with this in mind we ask you to dress your child in clothes that they can manage themselves. Joggers and sweatshirts are ideal for the winter and shorts and t-shirts for the summer. Clothing should be easy to launder, as our activities can be very messy! All items of clothing should be named. Children should not wear jewellery for reasons of safety.
Children have access to outdoor activities in all weathers, so please ensure they have waterproof coats and wellies for the rain, hats and gloves for the cold and sun hats when it’s hot. Shoes should have easy fastenings, Velcro is ideal, as we encourage children to do as much as they can for themselves to ensure they are school ready.
Our Food
Snacks
All of the children in pre-school are entitled to free milk, which will be available during snack times. Children will also have access to water should they prefer it or need another drink.
We also have snack time in the morning and afternoon so the children can boost their energy levels. Children eat and drink at the snack table and are encouraged to independently choose and prepare their own snack. If your child has any special dietary requirements, please discuss this with a member of staff.
Drinks
Please provide your child with a drinks bottle filled that they can identify, but also named to help staff. This should be filled with water and we will top up when needed. We ask you to not provide squash or juice as drinking this throughout the day can cause tooth decay.
Lunchtime
If you choose a lunchtime session, your child will need a heathly packed lunch.
We are committed to promoting the health and wellbeing of all children in our care. We recognise the vital role that nutrition plays in children’s development and learning. In line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and government guidance on healthy eating, we aim to support parents and carers in providing nutritious packed lunches that meet children’s needs and instil healthy eating habits for life. Lunchtimes will be fully supervised.
Ensuring Your Child Is School Ready
Starting Pre-school
We will discuss the start date and register you and your child into our online learning journal and ask you to complete the All About Me Form, as this will give us a real insight to your child’s home life and how to best support them during their settling in period. Your child will be allocated a key worker who will discuss their wellbeing and development with you.
Preparing your child for setting
We want every child to feel happy, confident, and secure as they begin their journey with us. Whether your child is joining as a baby, toddler, or preschooler, there are simple ways you can support a smooth transition into nursery life.
Here are a few things that can help:
Talk positively about the nursery and all the fun things your child will experience.
Establish a routine at home that mirrors the nursery day — such as regular mealtimes, nap times, and playtimes.
Help your child become familiar with sitting at a table for meals.
If your child will be sleeping at nursery, encourage them to rest in a different environment at home, such as a cot or bed that isn’t their own.
Support independence with tasks like:
Dressing and undressing (choose clothes with easy fastenings like Velcro or zips)
Using the toilet, flushing, and washing hands
Blowing their nose
Eating lunch or snacks on their own
Tidying away toys and hanging up coats
Encourage play in different settings (like the park) and help your child learn to interact with others, including children of different ages.
Give your child opportunities to spend short periods of time away from you. This helps them build trust and feel safe with new adults.
Working together, we can help your child settle into nursery life with confidence and curiosity.
Our SEND Offer
How does the setting know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs?
At our settings we ensure we maintain a strong professional relationship with our parents, enabling open and honest conversations that help meet the needs of the children. We ask that parents fill out an all about me questionnaire before the child starts and write any early concerns they may have. We ensure that we carry out regular observations, and continually monitor development enabling us to identify any areas of need the child might have. Together, we can discuss any areas of concern and how we can support your child both internally and with the support of external agencies.
Your child will be assigned a key person to look after them when they first start at the setting, and we encourage parents and carers to talk to this person openly about any areas they feel their child may need extra support in. We also have an open-door policy which means that parents can come and speak to the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator and our Setting Manager at any time.
How will we support my child?
During our settling-in program, the setting and parent/carer will share information about the strengths and needs of your child. Parents and carers will have the opportunity to accompany their child on a visit to help settle them and develop a relationship with their child’s key person. The child will always be at the heart of all we do, and it is through our work with parents and the wider family that we aim to achieve this.
Observations, assessment and planning all contribute to individual plans and ongoing planning which specifically focuses on your child’s current interests and next steps for their development. We will also listen to you as parent/carer as well as observing and listening to your child. Our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator will explain to you how your child’s individual needs can be met and how we review the effectiveness of these strategies through regular ongoing observation. Informal discussions will take place between parent/carer and key person to ensure the strategies remain appropriate and effective at all times, and in addition the key person will build up a solid relationship with the individual child to ensure that their voice and opinion is also heard.
How will the curriculum be matched to my child’s needs?
At our settings we use various methods of teaching to enable us to support each child to reach their maximum potential. Key Workers prepare specifically designed activities for their focus child, this allows the child’s key person to record an ongoing record of development alongside the Early Years developmental framework. The setting use tapestry to enable parents to get a snapshot of the child’s interactions, activities and learning. This is also used as a great tool for parents/carers to share exciting news or any new learning or even concerns that they may have. Most importantly, you will be able to see a record of how your child progresses with a shared baseline at the end of each term. Each child’s tapestry is updated and regularly monitored, by the child’s key worker and is overseen by the management. Any information highlighted as an area of concern in development, or and areas still requiring additional support, will be reviewed every term by the SEND coordinator and Manager and acted upon as required.
How will both you and I know how my child is doing and how will you help me to support my child’s learning?
Your child’s Learning Journal and relevant Individual Plan is readily available within the Nursery for you to access at any time. All progress is reviewed using the Early Years Statutory Framework “Early Years outcomes and Development Matters” which are produced by the Department of Education and details clearly expected developmental milestones in each area of learning and for each stage of development up to the end of Reception year. Information regarding this can be found on the following government websites www.foundationyears.org.uk and www.education.gov.uk/publications.
If an Individual plan is required, the SENDCo and key worker will work closely to ensure this is filled out to ensure your child receives consistent and secure support. It will not only detail strategies for us to use here at Nursery but also how they can be adapted for support at home. These strategies will be discussed and reviewed regularly by all those concerned to ensure they remain effective.
Whilst our staff are always available to discuss any concerns you may have on a daily basis; we also invite you into the setting for a 6 week settling in meeting after your child starts.
This gives opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have, or to gain general feedback on how your child Is settling in. This will allow us to adapt our planning and activities accordingly.
What support will there be for my child’s overall well-being?
We offer a friendly and welcoming environment. Our staff are good role models and promote positive behaviours. If a child displays unacceptable behaviour, we will work with both parents and child to improve and support their behaviour.
Where necessary, advice will be sought from outside agencies and training attended to help meet the individual needs. The child’s contribution will also be included through information provided by the parents and the key person’s own observation and knowledge of the child. This will enable us to observe and highlight any triggers, patterns and effective strategies to build and focus on those behavioural issues.
It may be necessary to increase staff ratios using the relevant inclusion funding to maintain the necessary levels of supervision to allow us to achieve this.
A risk assessment would also be carried out, including any medical and personal care required and a full discussion will occur as to whether we are able to provide this based on our current levels of basic first aid knowledge and training.
If you have any concerns at any time for your child’s overall well-being, we encourage an open door policy and would encourage you to seek assistance from your child’s key person or the Setting Manager.
What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the early years setting?
What training are the staff, supporting children with SEND, had or are having?
As detailed above our SEND and inclusion coordinator maintains up to date knowledge through relevant and regular training.
Most staff are either qualified at a level 3 in Early years and Education or are currently undertaking their level 3. All staff have good sound knowledge of the development matter EYFS and are always keeping on top of updates and changes through west Sussex. During supervisions, staff are encouraged to discuss and reflect on how they would like to further their own personal development, and as a setting we consistently reflect on areas of learning required to meet the needs of the children.
How will my child be included in activities outside the early years setting including trips?
How accessible is the early years environment? (Indoors and outdoors)
All three of our settings are designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind, both indoors and outdoors. All three of our settings have access to outdoor areas, ensuring children can explore, play, and learn in fresh air daily.
- Bright Little Kiddies and Littlehampton are located on level floors with no large steps, making them easily accessible.
- Curious Little Minds has a small step leading to the outdoor area, but we offer support where needed.
- Bright Little Kiddies also features a spacious disabled toilet for children and visitors who may require it.
We continually adapt our environments with children’s needs in mind — including child-sized tables and chairs, soft carpets, low-level toys and resources, and stools to help children reach the toilet facilities. Our goal is to create welcoming, accessible spaces where every child can feel confident, independent, and supported.
How will the early years setting prepare and support my child to join the early years setting, transfer to a new setting/school?
We provide settling-in sessions in order to help your child familiarise themselves with their new surroundings and get to know our indoor and outdoor learning environment. Each child is assigned a key person, who will form a relationship of trust and support with the parent and the child during these sessions. The parent/carer is asked to fill out an all about me form, and a parent view form. An online journal is used to gather information on your child and share their development and their journey.
During your child’s transition to Primary school or moving onto another setting the Key person and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator will share information with the school or new setting along with the parent/carer.
Learning journals, progress records, group observations and other relevant documents will be passed on to their new setting. Teachers are invited to come into the setting to observe your child in their play and current environment and enable us to share as much information as possible to ensure a smooth transition. Regular meetings with schools and other settings ensure that we understand the importance of a smooth transition and you will be given time to discuss this with the setting to discuss any concerns you may have for your child before they move on.
The use of role play with school uniform, books and lunch time practice is a good way to help a child become familiar with new routines. Part of our Ethos as a setting is to encourage children to become independent, life-long learners and therefore the transition process into school takes place through your child’s time with us. We believe that by preparing them to become confident children with high levels of self-esteem we will encourage your child to flourish in the wider world around them.
How are the early years settings resources allocated and matched to children’s special educational needs?
How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child will receive?
Within the setting the process for highlighting potential additional needs will be completed as described above and an individual plan will be agreed and put in force through collaboration with parents/carers. The setting will ensure that any strategies agreed upon are appropriate and achievable for not only the individual child and staff but also the parents/carers, and progress will be monitored through ongoing observation and discussion. Should additional professional assistance be thought to be necessary the setting will, with parents/carers permission, make a referral to the Early Years Inclusion Team. They will observe the Child at the setting and assist parents/carers and the setting with any additional strategies, advice or guidance for further parental referral to outside professionals. The setting will then, where possible, work with these professionals and parents/carers to support the child’s further development and, once again, ongoing observation and discussion will continue to highlight all progress made. How are parents involved in the early years setting? How can I be involved?
Parents/carers are encouraged to be involved in their child’s learning both at home and within the setting. We use Tapestry which is an online learning journal, giving parents the opportunity to share events or achievements that their child has experienced outside of setting, and for you to easily see what your child is learning and enjoying at setting. We have termly newsletters, sharing all information with parents and upcoming events. All parents can talk to their child’s key worker or manager at a mutually convenient time, you will also be encouraged to make an appointment to discuss your child’s journal and progress termly or more often if you wish.
