Our Rooms
Learning and Play
Children learn individually and with others through play. We offer our children a play-based curriculum which meets all the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.
Our curriculum supports all aspects of their learning and development and encourages children’s in-inbuilt curiosity and desire to make sense of the world around them and helps them to discover that learning is interesting and fun. We also believe that children learn through their senses and include lots of fun texture and messy play. Our curriculum is delivered with effective adult support which allows the children to explore, investigate and enjoy the learning experience. This is vitally important if children are going to remain keen learners for the rest of their lives.
We deliver the Early Year’s Foundation Stage curriculum (EYFS) in a number of ways, through:

Baby Room
At Little Robins our Baby Room is designed especially for our younger children with natural wooden low-level furniture and soft lighting, making it a relaxing and comfortable environment for very young children. Our Baby Room has a ratio of 1 member of staff for every 3 children.
Our Baby Room is well resourced and clean, young children use their hands, feet and mouths to explore objects and we have a ‘no outdoor shoe’ policy to keep our soft floor surface clean and safe.
Our Babies access the outside area daily.
The children learn and develop through play following the 3 prime ares of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Prime
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Using these three prime areas we ensure our Babies have the early building block for successful development and learning.
Toddler Room
The Toddler Room at Little Robins is a caring and stimulating environment for young children. Following the 7 areas of learning from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the room is set up in defined areas which support children’s learning and development and which match the interests of the children. Through the use of low level natural wooden furniture, the low-level units allow the children to access resources independently and allow for separate construction, story, creative, physical and imaginative spaces.
The children are supported to achieve their full potential through a range of purposeful activities and social interactions both indoors and outdoors.
The children are encouraged to self-serve during meal times. We don’t use plastic plates but believe children should eat of crock plates and pour their own milk/water from small jugs. Children have access to drinking water throughout the day.
The room offers an area for sand and water play, an easel for painting, drawing and getting messy, musical instruments, puzzles and shape sorters. There is also a book corner with comfy cushions and construction toys.
This room also has direct access to the outdoor environment, the children are encouraged to go out and experience all weathers and where appropriate indoor activities are continued outside such as painting.
The Nursery Room has a separate bathroom which has low-level toilets and sinks, good hygiene is actively promoted and children are encouraged to wash the hands and faces.
We work in partnership with parents to promote aspects such as potty training, self-service and the important self-care skills of beginning to dress themselves.
Pre-school
We aim to deliver the same level of teaching and care as the school nursery and are able to do so on a smaller ratio. Following the 7 areas of learning from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the room is set up in defined areas that support children’s learning and development and which match the interests of the children. We recognise the importance of children being independent and confident learners, we use a range of experiences, resources and tools to ensure all children are prepared for school. The pre-school room has defined areas for ICT with a computer, sand and water, creative, maths, writing, role-play and imaginative play.
Throughout the day, there is a combination of focused adult led experiences, opportunities to practice letters and numbers and opportunities for the children to choose their own activities. The planned experiences are repeated throughout the week to allow children time to repeat, practice and extend their skills, development and which match the interests of the children. We recognise the importance of children being independent and confident learners, we use a range of experiences, resources and tools to ensure all children are prepared for school. The pre-school room has defined areas for ICT with a computer, sand and
water, creative, maths, writing, role-play and imaginative play.
Our Pre-School staff use Phase 1 of the phonics system Letters and Sounds which will support the children’s early listening and reading skills ready for when they move on to school The staff are supportive of and recognise individual children’s learning and provide Key Group time with their Key Person throughout the day to prepare the children in readiness for starting school.
The staff work with the children to embed key principles including listening, communication, behavior, and confidence. This is achieved through play and by challenging the children’s thinking.
