British Values at Little Angels Pre School
British Values are the fundamental values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect for those with different faiths and beliefs. These are already imbedded firmly in all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Read on to discover how Little Angels promotes these values.

British Values

Democracy
We always ensure we let children know their views count and encourage everyone to value each other’s opinions and values. Children are actively encouraged to share views on for example what book they might like or what activity they would like next out of a choice. This is normally through a show of hands. We provide games and activities that promote turn taking, sharing and collaboration with each other and we ensure children know that their questions are valued.

Rule of Law
We have golden rules that the children help to create. We ensure children understand and can distinguish right from wrong and that behaviours and actions have consequences, and that these rules apply to everyone equally. For example, children are aware of the rules of tidy up time or using certain equipment etc.

Individual liberty
We encourage and give opportunities for our children to develop their own self-knowledge, self-esteem, and confidence in their own abilities. We allow children to take risks for example in an obstacle course set up and to then talk about their experiences and learning of this. We work hard on helping children to explore the language of feelings and responsibility and to understand that everyone is free to have different opinions and feelings of the same thing and that these are all valid, and we create boundaries that encourage our children to make safe choices particularly through our programme of personal, social and emotional development.

Mutual respect & tolerance
Building on individual liberty we continue to ensure children learn and understand the importance of tolerance, sharing and respecting each other’s opinions. We share stories that promote and reflect the value and diversity of children’s experiences. We promote and value all views, faiths, cultures and races as well as teaching respect for ourselves and others regardless of faith, disability, gender, or appearance. We arrange visits to and from the wider community so that children can experience these first-hand, where possible. We talk about the similarities and differences of each other’s families, faiths, cultures, and traditions and teach that these should all be valued. We promote understanding, we celebrate, and discuss the different practices, celebrations and experiences of our children, families, staff, and the community around us. We teach, promote, and expect good manners and courteous behaviours towards everyone.
