When Havering Green Street contacted us to see if we would like to help them plant some trees over Haynes Park we were very excited as this is our local park which we spend a lot of time visiting and a good opportunity to help the community. We arranged for all the Rainbow Room children and staff to go on Friday 17th March 2023. Although the weather was quite wet all the children and staff excitedly put on their Wellington boots and had lots of fun regardless. Once at the park the children and staff helped to dig the holes with support and guidance from the professionals and then put the wood chips on top once the holes were covered. They were given metal tags to put in the mud once the trees were planted so that everyone would know which tree were planted in each plot. They were told that the trees they were planting were Apple, Pear, Peach, Walnut and Apricot. The idea is that once the trees have grown anyone in the community can go and pick the fruit to take home. They then put green sleeves on top of the tree trunks to protect them from any animals nearby. The children and staff discussed that they would like to go back once the trees have grown and pick the peaches so our chef can make a peach crumble for dessert one day. Someone else suggested that we could make Apricot jam. The children found some worms when digging in the ground and they had fun watching them wiggling around. This was such a fun activity and all the children are looking forward to going back to see how well they have grown. Feel free to go and have a look for yourself and watch them grow, there is a plaque which says Creative Kids so you will know which trees were planted by us.
